Big Berkey Filters Gravity Filter

Big Berkey Filter is a gravity water filter designed to produce potable water, that is clean and safe, from contaminated water, river and pond water, and from any water source that is susceptible to contamination.  Big Berkey filters operate without the need for electricity or water pressure.  This characteristic makes the water filter the perfect choice for emergency and disaster preparedness.

Safe Water Harder to Find

Everybody can agree that life without clean and safe water would be very difficult.  Safe food and water are important to a stable and healthy society.  Yet clean, safe, and healthy water is becoming more difficult to find today.  It seems like even our municipal water sources are, at times, compromised, and become contaminated when old supply pipes break, earth quakes occur, or industrial accidents happen. It just makes sense to store a little water and have a water filter that can be used to purify water when the need arises. This is where the Berkey water filter will exceed all expectations.

How Big Berkey Filters work

Big Berkey water filters work using water pressure created by gravity. The filters are divided into two chambers, an upper chamber where untreated water is placed, and a lower chamber where the purified water is stored. Black Berkey water filters are installed in up to four small holes in the base of the top chamber with a nut and washer. When water is poured into the top chamber, the pressure for the water against the Black Berkey water filters allows water to filter through. As the water filters through small contaminants and sediment are trapped, preventing them from entering the clean water chamber with the now clean and safe water. In addition, the Black Berkey filters, through the use of ionic adsorption, bond to dangerous chemicals, preventing them from passing through the filter. This simple yet effective process creates purified water that is 99.9999 percent clean.

Spigot types for Big Berkey Filters

The lower chamber of Big Berkey filters has a hole near the bottom where a spigot is installed. Purified water is dispensed from this spigot. There are three types of spigots that can be installed on Big Berkey filters. The spigots that can be used are the standard spigot, vino spigot, or water level sight glass spigot. All Big Berkey filters come with the standard spigot.

Standard Spigots

Standard Berkey spigot for Big Berkey filters have three positions: off position, attended on, and unattended on. Pressing down on the spigot handle while in the off position will place the spigot in the attended on position and will allow water to flow until downward pressure is stopped. Lifting up on the spigot handled and raising it to the highest position will put the spigot into unattended on and allows water to flow from the spigot until it is returned to the off position.

Vino spigots

Berkey Vino Spigot

The Berkey Vino spigot design is different than the standard spigot. This spigot can control flow rate. The two main positions for this spigot are on and off. But between these positions the handle can be moved to increase or decrease the flow rate. There is no attended on position for this spigot. Wherever the spigot hand is placed, that particular flow rate will remain until the filter is empty or someone turns the spigot off. Vino spigots fit Big Berkey filters and any of the stainless steel British Berkefeld and Berkey stainless steel filters and they are a very popular upgrade.

Water Level View Through Glass Spigot

Another very popular upgrade for Big Berkey water filters is the water level spigot. This spigot is similar to the standard spigot with respect to dispensing purified water. Big Berkey filters are made from highly polished stainless steel. When water is filtered it is stored in the lower clean water chamber. The problem with stainless steel is that you can’t see inside the storage chamber without tipping the top chamber to look in. Unless you are Superman, you will not be able to see through the stainless steel to view the water level. However, install a water level view through glass spigot, and the water level in your clean water chamber is in plain sight.

The sight glass spigot has a glass tube that rises vertically from the top of the spigot. Water from the filter is allowed to enter the sight glass and will rise to the same level as the water in clean water chamber, revealing the exact amount of stored water. The glass tube is installed in a sturdy metal protective tube to protect if from damage. Having a sight glass spigot helps you know when to put water in the top chamber so that you always have clean safe water.

Storing Big Berkey filters

Big Berkey filters stand about 20.5 inches when installed for water filtering. But when you are ready to store or transport the filter, the two chambers can be nested inside of each other and be placed in a box that is 14 x 9 x 9 inches. This is compact enough to place in a larger suitcase or place in the trunk of a car for travel.

When you are ready to store your Big Berkey filter you will need to remove the Black Berkey filters. Failure to remove the filters during transportation can result in damage to the filters. The best way to transport the filters is to remove them, place them in a sunny window for a day to dry out, and then wrap them in bubble wrap or in cloth to protect them from being cracked. Storing your Big Berkey and Black Berkey filters in this way will provide years of quality water.
